5 Reasons to Add a Little Extra Magic to a Portrait

Sometimes, a photo that feels like a dream rather than a real moment can tell your story even better.

In my studio, everything begins with a simple recipe: soft lighting, a neutral backdrop, and you. But sometimes, adding a touch of photo magic, aka Photoshop, can take those ho-hum images and turn them into something magical.

These aren’t completely transformed into fantasy, but gently enhanced… like adding a whisper of whimsy to your beautiful story.

Are you in?

1. A Layer to Add Interest

Not every photo needs a full-blown transformation.

Although a soft, simple layer of texture or a dreamy background can add just enough to give the image some extra enchantment.

This is about enhancing the beauty that’s already there, not replacing it.

I took this maternity image that started simple and sweet and gave it something extra. She now sits in an ethereal tunnel. This is simple and doesn’t take away from the “mom to be”.

She looks like she’s glowing now.

2. Your Story, Just a Little More Dreamy

These simple edits enhance your images to reflect how the moment felt, not just how it looked.
A soft glow, floating dust, or a painterly background will turn a simple portrait into something that feels romantic or enchanting.

I added floral layers and played with the colors to give this a special feel.

Now it feels more like a “Dreamy Photo Session.”

She’s wrapped in yards and yards of fabric, and my assistant helped throw the fabric to give it movement. This type of portrait takes patience from the model. It can take up to 15 minutes to get one beautiful portrait.

3. Studio Simplicity, Endless Possibility

Because everything begins in a clean, controlled studio space, it opens the door to creativity afterward.

I carefully set everything in place. The lighting and backdrops are set up ahead of time. We go in with a plan. But sometimes, the plan changes, and that’s okay too.

Multiple textures, colors, and backgrounds can be added later—giving you variety without the stress of multiple locations. It all happens inside a comfortable and climate-controlled studio.

I went a little dark with the image below. She reminded me of a 1960s Vampira, so I pulled out the spooky stuff and added a big spiderweb.

Then next photo, I went for a film noir feel and added texture to give it an old film vibe.

4. Perfect for the Whimsical at Heart (But Still You)

This style isn’t about channeling someone else; it’s about softly stepping into a mood.

Whether it’s a hint of vintage softness, a dreamy haze, or a subtle artistic backdrop, you’re still the focus… just with a little glow or color around your story.

This can be as dramatic or subtle as you’d like.

I show a little added drama below, without going over the top. It’s still you, but we add a little pop! Texture on the background, and slightly muted colors.

This would be gorgeous on a bedroom wall in an ornate frame.

My Photoshop skills are coming along. I can enhance a portrait, but I’m not quite elevated to turn you into a mermaid, yet.

Check back soon, though, I’m constantly working on my skills.

5. It’s Not for Everyone, and That’s the Magic of It

Some love perfectly natural, untouched moments—and that will always have a place here.
But for those who are drawn to something different, want extra drama, or a little more enchantment… this is where your photos begin to feel exciting.

Create your own coffee table book or display a large self-portrait on your living room wall.

Let’s bring back drama to our lives.

Think back to the old days when large portraits were the norm. My mom had a 3 ft painting of her in the 80s. She’s in a blue dress, and it lives in a huge, gold, ornate frame.

I think as a society, we’ve decided large portraits are vain or in poor taste.

But, I think now more than ever, we need to bring back large wall art. You should have a portrait hanging up in your home and display it proudly.

Closing Thoughts

At the end of it all, your photos are still you, your laughter, your connection, your story.

The magic simply lingers a little longer in the frame and reminds you of that day and how special it was.

Whether you choose something natural or prefer a more dreamlike portrait, the heart of it remains the same. You're preserving a moment that’ll take you back in time, again and again.

If your heart is drawn to images that feel a little more like a dream, I’d love to create something special with you. Whether we keep things simple or add just a hint of wonder, your story will be at the center of it all.
When you’re ready, you can step into the studio, and we’ll begin creating something you’ll treasure for years to come.

Cheers,

Annette
