Studio vs. Outdoor Portraits: Why a Studio Session Might Be Better

Studio Photo

One of the first questions I ask during our phone call is, “Do you want to do this in the studio or outside?” Both can create the perfect backdrop for your portraits. But they can feel very different, and the best choice depends on how you want to feel during your session. It also depends on how you want the photo to look.

(This is Part 1 of a 2-part series)

Today we're taking a step into my studio. Next time, we'll head up to Wrightwood, explore the rocky desert, and even take a trip to the coast.

If you've been wondering whether a studio portrait session in the High Desert is right for you, you’re in the right place. Grab a cup of tea and let's dive in.

What Happens During a Studio Session

Imagine walking into the studio and hearing your favorite music playing. I greet you with a warm hug because at this point, we feel like old friends. The studio is climate-controlled so it’ll feel cozy during the winter or cool during the summer. It’s a cottage-sized space on my property, in Pinon Hills. The drive might have felt short or long, depending on where you’re coming from: Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Redlands, or Rancho Cucamonga.

As you enter, you immediately notice large portraits in gold frames on the walls. There’s a mustard yellow sofa to drop your things on. An album or two are out on display for you to look through. There’s a private corner with a curtain to change into your first outfit. And the studio wouldn’t be complete without a basket of simple snacks and drinks.

But the real magic isn't on the walls or in a basket. The magic happens once the pink door closes behind you.

It's just you and me.

No nosy Nellies at a park. No random lady walking her dog. You get to be who you are. Or who you want to portray. Unbothered and in a judgment-free zone.

Maybe you’re a little nervous and anxious about being in front of the camera. But you can be you. This is your time to play and shine.

One-on-One Time

Many of the women I photograph spend time taking care of others. Kids, their clients, elderly parents, a spouse, the dog, the neighbor, etc. A studio session is that rare time when the day revolves around you. You get to indulge in some much-needed “you-time.”

Instead of “Calgon, take me away, it’s photographer, take me away.”

Because a studio session is usually a one-on-one experience, there's no rushing or moving out of the way. Even if you and your daughter are getting portraits, it’s still considered one-on-one.

You get me all to yourself. We stream music you love, we talk, we laugh, and you can dance your way through the session. Many clients have told me it felt more like a therapy session than a portrait session. They’ve never felt more beautiful or seen. And sometimes there are tears.

That's on purpose. When you feel relaxed and comfortable, it shows in your eyes, your smile, and your shoulders. It’s what turns a nice picture into something you'll want to show off in your home.

Photos can get deep, and my studio is a judgment-free space filled with love and laughter. Bring your most vulnerable self and let’s dig in!

Building Your Self-Confidence

Honesty Hour: A lot of people feel super awkward in front of a camera. Me included. I don’t know what to do with my hands, but I can tell you what to do with your hands. You might be anxious about your arms, your imperfect smile, or the fact that you “don’t photograph well." I hear it all the time, and I want you to know you're not the problem.

The problem was the guidance you didn’t receive from your last photographer.

In the studio, I will pose you. I guide you from your feet up to your chin.

You don't have to know what to do; that's my job. And I love it! I get to be bossy for once. If you want to try something dramatic, or a little taboo, you can do it without anyone watching. That’s the joy of being in the studio.

I always say we get to play. And I mean it. The whole outside world is set on pause for a couple hours while you get to take off the mask and just be you. Your wild, loud, unapologetic self. Unless you’re wearing an actual fantasy mask, then leave it on.

This is why studio sessions are such a powerful confidence booster. Clients walk in nervous and walk out standing a little taller. When you finally see your portraits at your reveal, you get to see yourself the way your friends and family see you. A glorious and bright sparkler of a person.

A portrait session really is more than just a photo. It’s about capturing your essence. I want to reach inside and find the real you.

Weather-Proof Sessions (Hello, Windy High Desert)

If you live up here, you know about our wind and weather that can change in 20 minutes. The High Desert doesn’t care about your plans.

Summer weather hangs out in the triple digits. Sweat dripping down your back, squinting into the sun, frizzy hair, flushed pink skin, and melting makeup is not exactly the fairytale look we're going for.

Winter weather is usually freezing cold, with desolate desert backdrops, and the occasional snow in Pinon Hills and Wrightwood. Beautiful to look at. Not so great when you're standing in a flowy gown with goosebumps.

If you want greenery in the background, winter is not the time. Spring doesn’t arrive until later, sometimes as late as May.

I had an engaged couple who wanted green trees, and we had to reschedule 3 times, waiting for the trees to pop the green out.

And then there's the wind. Anyone who's lived in Apple Valley, Hesperia, or Victorville knows the wind can turn a good hair day into a bird's nest in thirty seconds. It’ll send a fluffy tulle skirt sailing into the next town over. Ugh!

In a studio, none of that stuff matters. It's comfortable inside year-round, your hair and makeup stay put, and we won’t have to reschedule because of a heat advisory, flash flood, or a windstorm.

For many clients, that alone makes a studio session the top choice, especially from November through April and again June through September.

And don’t even get me started on seasonal allergies. If you suffer from them, I know you'd prefer to be indoors during certain months.

For me, the weather was one of the top reasons I built a studio. Frigid senior sessions during April and windy family sessions were the bane of my business.

Changing is Easy

Want an ethereal fairy look, a dark and dramatic gothic look, and something a little softer with a sprinkle of romance? In a studio, it's sooo easy.

You don’t have to worry about changing in the backseat of a car, no hauling garment bags down a dusty trail or through pokey weeds.

You can change looks comfortably and quickly, easily touch up your makeup, and adjust any accessories like crowns, wings, and jewelry without fighting the wind and weather.

The studio has a changing corner complete with curtain and a chair. You can fix your outfit in front of the full-length mirror and hang up your dresses, as well.

An in-studio session is ideal for those who want variety in looks and in their final artwork.

Lighting: I’m a Control-freak

This is the part where I can nerd out. My world is fine art photography, and in the studio I can create and play with light exactly the way the old masters intended.

Outdoors, we're at the mercy of the sun, rolling clouds, and harsh shadows.

In the studio, I can control all the lighting details, from soft, glowy, painterly light to deep, dramatic shadows for a moodier feel.

I have big softboxes for a softer, less shadowy look, and a beauty dish for 1940s-style glamour. My lights work for us, depending on what look you’re going for.

Control means consistency. Every portrait in your collection looks polished and cohesive. Which matters when your images are turned into prints, wall art, and albums.

Here’s a little secret: some of my favorite portraits were created in the studio.

With beautiful lighting and fine art editing, a studio portrait can become an enchanted castle or a floral fantasy. You get the storybook setting without bugs, the heat, or the hike. Ha!

If you have the magic, or want it created for you, the studio is where we bring it all to life.

Every Story Has Magic

A studio session is perfect for:

  • Fantasy and fine art portraits: elves, fairies, sorcerers, dark queens, and whimsical dreamers

  • Fantasy maternity: flowing gowns and glowing bellies, comfortable yet magical

  • Graduates and seniors who want something more artistic than a standard yearbook photo

  • Business branding for playful small businesses and boutique owners; we set up a faux office for you, right in the studio

  • Milestone and self-love portraits for birthdays, new chapters, or simply because you deserve to exist in big, beautiful photos

Comfortable, From Start to Finish

From the moment you arrive, the studio is designed to feel calm, private, and welcoming. There's a space to park, you can breathe, sit and relax, an ideal temperature, and nowhere you need to hurry off to.

It's especially good for anyone who feels anxious, is expecting a baby, or simply wants a more gentle and tailored experience. Don’t get me wrong, there will be laughs. I’m a yapper, and I’m not a quiet person. But I want you to feel at peace in the space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a studio session better than an outdoor session?
Neither is better or worse. A studio session is best if you want privacy, comfort, multiple outfits, and a relaxed, confidence-building experience.

Outdoor sessions shine for movement and natural scenery. If you’d love to frolic through the trees, outdoors is a better option. If you have a family of 15, outdoor is a better option as well. My cottage-sized studio is built for intimate sessions and cannot comfortably fit 15 adults inside.

Where is your studio located?
My private studio is in Pinon Hills, up in the High Desert of Southern California. It’s an easy drive from Hesperia, Victorville, Wrightwood, Palmdale, and Rancho Cucamonga.

I do live on a dirt road, but your car will make it just fine. And if you’re too nervous to drive on the dirt road, you can leave your car at the end of the road, and I’ll pick you up.

Can I bring more than one outfit to a studio session?
Yes! Studio sessions make changing into multiple outfits easy. We'll plan your outfits together during your phone consultation.

I tell clients to bring everything, and we can go from there.

What's the best time of year for a studio session in the High Desert?
Any time, but studio sessions are especially popular in summer and winter, when extreme heat, cold, and wind make outdoor sessions unbearable. In the High Desert, we often joke that we have 2 seasons: winter and summer.

Do I get digital files?
First and foremost, I’m a print-based business. I do not send you a link to an online gallery with 200 images you’ll never do anything with.

After your session, you’ll come back for an in-person image reveal and ordering appointment. This is when you choose wall art, albums, and printed artwork to invest in. Your portraits deserve to be displayed and held, not lost on a phone next to hundreds of screenshots. You receive a digital copy of each image you purchase. If you order an album with 35 images, you’ll get copies of those. If you order one single portrait, you receive that copy.

The ordering and reveal appointment usually lasts one hour.

*If you live far away, we can do the ordering and reveal at the session appointment. I need about 30 min to get the unedited images onto my computer for you to see and pull out samples of everything. The images will not be edited, but you can pick the ones you want me to edit. I often tell clients they can grab lunch or Starbucks in the next town over and come back, or simply hang out while I get things together. This option will be discussed during our phone call prior to your session so I know what’s happening ahead of time.

Is a Studio Session Right for You?

If you're craving one-on-one time, a more intimate and judgment-free zone, then yes. The session will leave you feeling beautiful and confident. And, heck, the studio might just become your new happy place. I know it’s mine.

So if you've been searching for a fine art portrait photographer in the High Desert or Southern California who will make you feel like a queen in your own fairytale and skin, you've found your person.
